Ombudsman Rob Behrens responds to The Law Society publishing Proposals for a 21st Century Justice System, a report on changes to the civil justice system which would improve access to justice.
Rob Behrens said:
“When things go wrong in public services, people must be able to hold authorities to account so that standards improve. The current system of multiple ombudsman schemes is a barrier to those who need help. The Law Society share our concerns that the landscape is confusing and fragmented for those seeking justice. I welcome their support in championing much needed reform.
“England is lagging behind the rest of the UK and other global democracies in terms of the right to access ombudsman schemes. We urge the Government to commit to building a modern, fair, and democratic system to enable individuals to resolve failings by public services. We need a single joined-up national public service ombudsman which can investigate complaints about the Government or public bodies without needing approval from MPs. This is critical for access to justice in the twenty-first century.”
