About the role

Are you an experienced Public Lawyer looking for your next challenge? We currently have vacancies in our legal team in London and Manchester. We will consider full and part-time applications, please state in your supporting document whether you wish to be considered a full or part time position.

As part of your role you will be responsible for providing legal advice on PHSO casework to the Ombudsman, senior members of his team and caseworkers across PHSO. You will advise on matters such as our jurisdiction, powers, and litigation such as responses to judicial review challenges, including drafting pre-action responses, acknowledgement of service and/or instructing counsel, and advice on corporate issues affecting the PHSO more generally ranging from commercial matters to employment.

Senior lawyers will be responsible for managing, leading and motivating junior lawyers, taking responsibility for their work and their professional development, as well as participating in general leadership activity as a senior member of staff at PHSO.

To be successful in the role you will be a qualified barrister or solicitor with at least 3 years’ post qualification experience, and demonstrable public law experience including a good understanding of the means by which public law decisions can be challenged. You should also be able to display an understanding of the law relating to Ombudsmen. You will have proven ability to think analytically, synthesise complex information and make evidence based judgements. Finally you will have proven credibility with senior figures as a trusted adviser.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work in an expanding legal team which is playing a key role in supporting PHSO as it develops new approaches, covering a broad range of challenging issues and working closely with a colleagues ranging from complaints investigators to the Ombudsman.
