About us

We make final decisions on complaints about the NHS in England, UK Government departments and some other public organisations.  Our service is free, fair and open to everyone.

We believe complaints have the power to improve public services and create lasting change. Our work often leads to wider improvements across public services, changing how organisations operate and how people experience them.

We have a strong voice and we have reported on a range of issues, including the impact of Windrush, HS2 and failings in State Pension age communications.

About the role

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic, passionate team dedicated to influencing positive change in public services. As a member of the Board, you will directly advise and support the Ombudsman by:

  • contributing to organisational leadership and performance monitoring
  • providing constructive challenge, scrutiny and feedback on PHSO’s work
  • developing and overseeing the delivery of our next corporate strategy.

We are looking for individuals from a range of backgrounds and are particularly interested in applicants with experience in:

  • government affairs
  • public policy
  • complaint handling
  • Ombudsman schemes.

We welcome interest from first-time Non-Executive Board members and those with a range of backgrounds, skills and experience. We particularly encourage applications from candidates from under-represented groups.

The selection panel will be:

  • Rebecca Hilsenrath, Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman
  • Polly Curtis, Non-Executive Board member
  • Colin Douglas, Independent Panel member.
